ABSTRACT

This paper explores Kinesics in Chimamanda Adichie’s Purple Hibiscus. Different aspects of kinesics include illustrators, adapters, regulators, affect displays, gestures, haptics, emblems, and postures and these have been effectively used by the writer to project the characters in the novel. The analysis reveals that the functions of these kinetic variables include supplementing, reinforcing and regulating verbal exchanges, revealing emotional states/personality traits, indicating likes/dislikes of individuals/situations/ideas and communicating relative status of interactants. The study gives the reader an insight into the characters and the relationships they have with one another in the novel.
